"The Incident": Finale Time!

If you're coming here for my thoughts/summary, I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed.

I know, I know. I write recaps for the last 13 episodes, and then slough off for the finale?

I'm sorry. But I'm writing an article on Lost for Books and Culture. It should be posted next Monday (I'll link to it), so that is taking precedence right now.

But next week, I'll write a summary to the episode, and if I'm feeling really ambitious, maybe a recap of the entire season. (I don't think I'll feel that ambitious.)

In the meantime, my predictions for the finale, which starts in less than 5 minutes:

1) Miles dies.

2) Ellie betrays Jack.

3) Hurley attempts something heroic.

4) We see Ellie leave the island.

5) We learn Kate's real reason for returning to the island, and it has something to do with Widmore and/or Ben—and nothing to do with Claire.

*Bonus: We learn why Hurley's been hauling around a guitar case.

Well, obviously my predictions were almost all wrong.

The only thing I was almost right about was that we'd find out why Hurley was carrying a guitar. Instead, we learned how he got it.

As I said, I'll post a recap next week, but for now let me just say:

That finale was phenomenal. I'm glad I didn't try to write a blog post last night, because it would have taken all night to comb through all the developments and implications.

But if anyone has thoughts or questions, feel free to share them.

How great that you get to write an article for B&C! I'm excited for you.

I think you can give Hurley some heroic points (to help the accuracy ratio of your predictions a little!)
for being available in his trusty Dharma van to pick up the wounded Sayid and help get Jack to the site (Swan? Orchid? I forget...)because Jack persuaded him it was the only way to save Sayid. Was it this episode or last week when Hurley expected them to have a plan to save the others after loading his backpack with canned goods? The heart of a hero, at least!

I don't think anyone would have predicted that we would get a back story on JACOB! Or that it was Locke & his coffin they were hauling in that big container! We were shown guns in it, probably because the Locke imposter was nearby looking at what they had at the time we got a glimpse. And then Juliet...so many unpredictable moments! The final bomb flash almost, not quite, anticlimatic! And where are we for next year? Blank slate? Wow.

We look forward to reading your article and your summary!

Karen,

Thanks for awarding me some bonus points for Hurley's heroic actions. You're too kind.

As for your reference to a "blank slate." How interesting you should choose that description! After all, wasn't there a certain philosopher (oh what was his name?) who believed our minds were a blank slate, a tabula rasa?

Oh yeah, wasn't that philosopher...John Locke.

And wasn't Golding's novel, The Lord of the Flies, written to refute that "blank slate" idea? Wasn't Golding's premise, as it played out with the kids stranded on a deserted island following a plane crash, that humans are all evil and it is our responsibility to contain/overcome that evil?

(By the way, the above is a rhetorical question. Wikipedia already confirmed it for me.)

I'm working on finishing up the article now (it's been a challenge). But I'm looking forward to a summary, especially since I've had some time to sort through everything.

But here's a teaser. I wonder, if in the course of five seasons, if we've ever heard any dialogue more important than this segment from the opening of "The Incident":

Not Jacob: You brought them here. Still trying to prove me wrong, aren't you?
Jacob: You are wrong.
Not Jacob: Am I? They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same.
Jacob: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.

I thought the finale post would be here today. I can't tell you how disappointed I am. in you.

I'm thorny for what I thaid.

First, a question. Is there a contest to rename your blog, and so potentially, a winner? (or do you selfishly just want to do it yourself?!)

Yes, I liked the blank slate/Locke connection, but had not thought about The Lord of the Flies plot or purpose. Thanks for that fun info! I love the layers within this show!

I thought that bit of dialogue very important, too, and it hit me even harder when I was listening to the show the second time while doing something else. I had to play those lines again, because now that we know how the season ended, it seems very relevant to time travel and the chance to do things differently to say "It only ends once, everything else is progress". I am hoping our characters have the chance to redeem themselves on the way to that "final ending" next year!
